Route and travel style
Mount Meru (4,566m) is a beautiful, underrated climb inside Arusha National Park. The lower trail passes buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkeys with an armed ranger, and the knife-edge summit ridge at dawn is unforgettable. It is excellent preparation for Kilimanjaro.

Day 1
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
Walk with an armed ranger past giraffe and buffalo to Miriakamba Hut.
Lunch, dinnerDay 2
Miriakamba to Saddle Hut
Climb steeply through forest to Saddle Hut, with an optional Little Meru summit.
Breakfast, lunch, dinnerDay 3
Summit Day to Miriakamba
Pre-dawn climb along the rim to Socialist Peak, then descend to Miriakamba.
Breakfast, lunch, dinnerDay 4
Miriakamba to Momella Gate
Final descent through the park and transfer back to Arusha.
