Overview

About Mount Meru

At 4,566 metres, Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and one of its most rewarding treks. Set inside Arusha National Park, the lower slopes teem with giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys, while the knife-edge summit ridge delivers a sunrise view across to Kilimanjaro that few climbers ever forget.

01

A wildlife mountain

Meru is unique: you climb accompanied by an armed park ranger because the forested lower slopes are home to big game. Few mountains in the world combine a genuine wildlife walk with a high-altitude summit.

02

The ideal acclimatization climb

Many climbers tackle Meru a few days before Kilimanjaro. The altitude profile and effort make it superb preparation, significantly improving your Kilimanjaro summit chances.

03

The summit ridge

The final pre-dawn push follows a dramatic crater rim to Socialist Peak, with the sun rising behind Kilimanjaro's snow cap — one of the great sunrises in Africa.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Mount Meru trek?

Most climbers take 3 to 4 days. The 4-day version is more comfortable and allows better acclimatization.

Is Meru harder than Kilimanjaro?

Meru is shorter but steeper in places and the summit ridge is more exposed. It is excellent training for Kilimanjaro.

Will I see animals?

Yes — giraffe, buffalo, warthog and colobus monkeys are common on the lower slopes, which is why a ranger accompanies the first day.

Can I combine Meru and Kilimanjaro?

Absolutely, and we recommend it. A short rest day between the two climbs works best.
