Choose enough days
Longer routes mean better acclimatization. A seven- or eight-day climb has a far higher success rate than a rushed five- or six-day attempt, simply because your body has more time to adjust.
Walk slowly — pole pole
The Swahili phrase 'pole pole' (slowly, slowly) is the single best summit tip. A deliberately slow pace conserves energy and helps you acclimatize.
Hydrate and eat
Drinking three to four litres of water a day and eating even when your appetite fades both reduce altitude symptoms. Your guides will keep encouraging you for good reason.
Listen to your guides
Reputable operators run daily health checks with a pulse oximeter. Be honest about how you feel — your mountain crew's experience is what gets most climbers to the top safely.
