Dry season: June to October
The long dry season offers the easiest game viewing of the year. Vegetation thins, animals gather at water, and the northern Serengeti hosts the river crossings. It is the busiest and most expensive window, so book early.
Green season: November to March
Short rains green the landscape and bring newborn animals and migratory birds. The southern Serengeti calving season peaks around February, and prices and crowds are lower.
The long rains: April and May
April and May see the heaviest rain and some camps close, but it is the quietest and most affordable time, with dramatic skies for photographers who don't mind the occasional wet afternoon.
Matching season to trip
Climbers and beach travelers should generally avoid the long rains, while safari-only travelers can find excellent value and few vehicles in the green months.
