Overview
Rising sharply above the Rift Valley near Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is a sacred peak to the Maasai and a bucket-list challenge for adventurous trekkers. At 2,962 metres it is climbed overnight, reaching the steaming crater rim at sunrise for unforgettable views over Lake Natron, the Rift Valley escarpment and, on clear days, the Serengeti plains.
Lengai is the only volcano on Earth that erupts natrocarbonatite lava — unusually cool, black lava that turns white as it weathers. The summit crater is an active, otherworldly landscape of cones, spatter and steaming vents found nowhere else on the planet.
The ascent begins around midnight to beat the heat and reach the rim for sunrise. It is steep, loose underfoot and demanding — a genuine adventure for fit trekkers — but the reward is a dawn arrival on one of Africa's most extraordinary summits.
Most climbs pair with a stay near Lake Natron, famous for its flamingos and red-tinted waters, plus time with the Maasai communities who hold the mountain sacred. It combines beautifully with a Serengeti safari or a Rift Valley road trip.

It is challenging — a steep overnight climb on loose ground gaining around 1,600 metres. Good fitness is essential, but no technical climbing skills are needed.
